Crews and people

How crews work, why they're by task rather than by person, and managing the roster.

Why crews are by task

A crew in Fairway is a task family — mowing, bunkers, irrigation, projects — not a fixed set of people. That's because the constraint on a golf course is almost always equipment rather than headcount. The triplex can't be in two places at once; Dave can.

Managing them

  1. 1Open Crews.
  2. 2Add a crew for each task family you actually schedule separately.
  3. 3Assign people to a crew as their usual home. They can still be scheduled onto anything.
  4. 4Delete crews you don't use. An empty crew on the brief every morning is noise.

People

The People screen is the roster — who exists, what role they have, their hourly rate if you track it, and whether they're active. Deactivating somebody keeps all their history and stops them counting against your plan.

Rates are manager-and-up

Hourly rates drive the labor cost on the schedule and the payroll file. Crew and leads never see them.

Questions

Can a person be in more than one crew?

They have one home crew, and can be scheduled onto any crew's shifts. In practice that covers how courses actually work.

What happens to somebody's jobs if I deactivate them?

Finished work stays exactly where it is, attributed to them. Anything still assigned and unfinished shows as unclaimed so it doesn't quietly disappear.
