The USGA's handicap service — the number a golfer carries between courses, and the identifier a club looks them up by.

A GHIN number belongs to the golfer, not the club, and follows them. A club's role is to attach it to their member record so leagues and events can be flighted without anybody re-typing it.

Fairway is built by people who had to learn all of this.
