Verticutting

Running vertical blades through the turf canopy to cut out lateral growth and grain, usually on greens.
Set shallow it grooms — it stands the leaf up and takes out the lateral runners that make a putting surface grainy. Set deep it becomes a cultivation practice that removes thatch and takes the surface out of play for a while.
It is one of the practices most worth photographing when it's done, because the surface looks worse before it looks better and somebody will ask.
