Verticutting

Also: vertical mowing · verticut

Running vertical blades through the turf canopy to cut out lateral growth and grain, usually on greens.

Set shallow it grooms — it stands the leaf up and takes out the lateral runners that make a putting surface grainy. Set deep it becomes a cultivation practice that removes thatch and takes the surface out of play for a while.

It is one of the practices most worth photographing when it's done, because the surface looks worse before it looks better and somebody will ask.

Fairway is built by people who had to learn all of this.
