Passing a weighted roller over greens to smooth the surface and gain speed without cutting lower.
Rolling buys speed that would otherwise cost height of cut, and height of cut is what the plant survives August on. Alternating roll and mow days is one of the more reliable ways to hold a surface through heat.
Modern light rollers do not cause the compaction the practice was once blamed for, on the frequencies most courses use.
